Innovations

Doug Lord of microSAIL! in concert with other noted designers in the sailing world have produced several innovations in radio control sailing.  This page lists those and provides links to more about some of these microSAIL! unique features.

(11 Mar 2003) microSAIL!  announced an on-going relationship with Dyna Yacht Incorporated, developers of the patented Canting Ballast Twin Foil technology, that now includes the rights to develop CBTF boats from 24" to 72".

Our first project will be a one meter LOA CBTF boat that will be a strict One Design as well as fitting in the Formula 100 class. For more information on the CBTF concept and Formula 100 Class see Graham Bantock's comments at his Sails Etc. FAQ section http://www.sailsetc.com/faqs.htm#Design

microSAIL!  and CBTFco are announcing that in the interest of better promoting CBTF in RC models that we have reached a mutual agreement whereby all RC model manufacturers interested in using CBTF for RC yachts between 24" and 87" may now apply for a license to do so and that we have mutually agreed to terminate microSAIL!'s exclusive rights to CBTF for RC models. Individuals wishing to use CBTF in one off designs are free to do so and Doug Lord will still act on behalf of CBTFco in answering any questions regarding the application of the technology to RC sailboats. Manufacturers may also contact Doug Lord for a copy of the license agreement."

CBTF = Canting Ballast Twin Foil technology was invented some time ago and patented by Veteran America's Cup deisgners Matt Brown and Bill Burns of Dyna Yacht Incorporated.

Recently, the technology for application to full size boats was licensed to Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design one of the worlds premier design groups.

One of their recent creations "Wild Oats" ,a 60 footer, has been phenomenally successful often beating larger boats on a boat for boat basis. Wild Oats has inspired Roy Disney and other maxi racers to order boats built with CBTF as well as inspired the legalization of the technology in the new maxZ86 class and the new Volvo 70 race boats.

CBTF incorporates a canting keel (around 52 degrees movement to each side) and twin rudders: one in front of the keel strut and one behind it. The boat is steered in two modes: 1)- steering-both rudders turn opposite directions,2)- collective- both rudders turn the same direction. The collective allows leeway to be effectively dialed out going upwind eliminating induced drag from the keel strut as well increasing VMG to windward. The placement of the twin rudders also creates a reduction in wavemaking drag.

Some additional innovations to be available on some microSAIL! F100 CBTF boats include a retractable forward rudder and single or dual adjustable angle of incidence t-foils......

microSAIL!  Specific innovations include

Vectored Lift™ - the microSAIL! designed system where the skipper can manually control a boat's altitude above the water on hydrofoils.

Quick Trac™ system - The Quick Trac™ retractable foil system for which patent protection is being sought is a revolutionary system that allows fully submerged altitude controlled foils to be instantly (one second or less) retracted.
This allows a sailing hydrofoil to not only get rid of the foils in light conditions but allows their use in marginal/transitional conditions: the foils can be quickly deployed to foil in a gust then be almost instantly retracted overcoming one of the biggest handicaps for hydrofoils.

Unique Hull and Deck construction methods

Hulls and decks are bonded together during original curing, ready for final painting.
- All hulls and decks are of carbon fiber, kevlar, and S-glass in various combinations
     and epoxy resin
-  No internal frames--"structural reinforcement, keel trunk, rudder tube, jib tube,
spinnaker pole mounts, and spinnaker trough molded in".
- Our proprietary process assures perfect alignment.
- Virtual one piece construction with a primary bond.
- The hull and deck are finished as a complete unit and show no seams.

Insta Reefing Systems™ - sail reduction innovations for those very windy days

Roll-A-Reef System
Zipper Reef System

Power Ballast Systems™ - radio controlled ballast shifting technology for certain models

Spinnaker Sail systems - patented true RC adjustable spinnakers on certain models

Wing Tip Rigs™ - sail shaping technology that provides additional control of the leech
