36" microMOTH RC Hydrofoil monohullThe new 36" microMOTH hydrofoil monohull Dimensions
The microMOTH is an experimental hydrofoil monohull being developed by microSAIL! This boat has no ballast under water and uses two small buoyancy modules to prevent it from turning over when it is first put into the water. The Trapeze Power Ballast System is extremely fast and is powered by a Guyatt 280 winch; it can move two pounds twenty inches in about one second. The Trapeze PBS (below) uses spectra line from the mast to the end of the rack (track on which the movable ballast slides) so that at full extension to either side the weight is almost entirely supported by the trapeze just like a crew is on a full size boat. The Trapeze PBS does not move fore and aft though the weight can be adjusted a couple of inches fore and aft. Initially, we feel that the pitch stability given to the boat by the rudder mounted hydrofoil will preclude any requirement for fore and aft movement of the ballast. This boat has a hydrofoil on the daggerboard and a hydrofoil on the rudder. Altitude is manually controlled via radio. This site will be updated as testing proceeds; the boat is highly experimental and will probably be very difficult to learn to sail but it's potential speed is nothing short of incredible. The boat: Loa 36" ; hull beam4" ; overall beam 31" ; Sail area 800 sq. inches in a Wing Tip Rig™ ; Draft, off foils 10"-on foils 2.5" more or less.; weight: 5.25lbs; Four channel radio system: Altitude control, Mainsheet, Rudder, Trapeze Power Ballast System.
